In the Lab
The mission of the FAGAN Stroke Lab at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA is to find new treatments for stroke patients. For the past 16 years, we have been investigating methods to achieve “Vascular Protection” after ischemia and reperfusion injury in the brain. Through our work with repurposed agents such as minocycline, atorvastatin, and candesartan, we have been successful in understanding the pivotal role the cerebral vasculature plays in, not only the initial injury, but the long term recovery after stroke. Using rodent models of ischemic stroke and sophisticated behavioral, biochemical, genetic and molecular techniques we have been able to make seminal discoveries that have moved the stroke field forward.
